Merchant Thomas Boylston is attacked by a group of irate women customers.
May 31, 1777
(ca.) When Boylston refuses to sell them coffee at a price they can afford, the mob of women drag him out of his shop and wheel him to the waterfront in a cart. Boylston, who had earlier received a shipment of coffee, which is very rare in the town, finally throws the keys to his shop to the women, who relieve him of a large cask of coffee beans. It is written that “a large concourse of men stood amazed, silent spectators of the whole transaction.”
